Fashion as Art?

Is Label dropping disturbing?

Yes. As a person who truly appreciates good fashion, I am slightly unnerved by people who think they know everything about the business because they know the major labels; D&G, Marc Jacobs, Chanel, Chloe, Prada, Yves St. Laurent, Gucci, etc. Or who just buy things or think they are great, just because the name is prestigous. The joke is on them. For instance, when I was at a seminar for fashion school hopefuls at a local art college, there was this girl who had these ratty early 90's bag. She would brag that they were Prada, Chanel, and would always ask, "guess how much I got them for?" Personally I could care less, but I would reply, "I dunno". With great excitment she would say, "for $2, at the thrift store!" Wow! Like I couldn't tell! Oh well, I guess if it makes her happy, let her have her crap bags. But one thing struck me, after thinking about this after a while: these companies have become so succesful, so reknowned that people are just buying the labels. Heck Dolce and Gabbana could just stick their famous labels on a peice of shit and it would sell for $200! Well who says they aren't... But anyways, as I said the joke is on the consumer. Our society has gotten this deep in consumerism, that any of the aforesaid corporations can just post a label on it and people will go crazy over it, thinking it's great art. How numb are we? People open your eyes and look at what you are actually buying!
